Acute Respiratory Care Modules
MSc, BSc, Dip & Study Days
Exacerbations of COPD are responsible for considerable morbidity and mortality, especially in patients with more severe COPD¹. Research indicates that higher exacerbation incidence rates are associated with more rapid decline in lung function and poorer quality of life².
Most patients with an exacerbation of COPD can be managed at home, although clearly some do need hospital admission. Recent trials have shown that 30% of patients admitted could be successfully treated at home with intermediate and nurse led home care. The decision as to where best to treat the patient involves a number of factors and relies upon professionals to be appropriately prepared and educated to make informed clinical decisions and manage the patient appropriately.
Exacerbations of asthma are no less important and according to Asthma UK, resulted in over 67,000 admissions in England in 2004³. The effects of an asthma attack can be devastating, both physically and mentally, and represents an ongoing problem. 75% of all admissions for asthma are avoidable4 .
Education and training are vital in terms of developing an infrastructure to assess, plan and implement effective and appropriate management of patients with respiratory conditions. A number of relevant programmes are:-
