Introduction
This BSc module aims to provide healthcare workers with the knowledge and skills required to care and manage for patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) from diagnosis, through the disease trajectory, to end of life care. In addition, it aims to enable the student to investigate various approaches to organising and delivering COPD Services through exploration of existing modules and appraisal of the literature, underpinning different methods of care delivery in both primary and secondary care and their interface
Module Format
This module is run on a blended learning basis supported by a comprehensive course pack and four structured study days over 30 weeks, which will include tutorials, online and classroom-based workshops and discussions, ensuring that theory and practice are integrated
Aims
This module will enable healthcare professionals to:

Analyse the impact of social, economic and environmental factors upon the development of COPD and critically appraise this in relation to provision of care

Critically analyse the pathophysiological changes associated with COPD

Interpret patient history and clinical data in order to comprehensively assess patients with COPD (including ruling out of differential diagnosis), plan and implement patient care appropriately

Critically appraise the legal, ethical and moral issues in context of the treatment and care of individuals with COPD

Critically analyse through reflection current multi-disciplinary approaches to organisation and delivery of care and services for patients with COPD, their carers and families

Critically evaluate current research and literature relating to COPD and its management
Course Content

Patient-centred primary and secondary care approaches to providing evidence based care to COPD patients in the context of today's healthcare environment

Disease processes applied to normal functioning of the respiratory system

Causes and prevalence of COPD

Diagnosis and assessment of patients including interpretation of spirometry, screening and assessment for oxygen therapy

Organisation and delivery of care and services

Psychosocial impact of the disease including end of life and ethical issues

Management strategies including pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies

Significance and management of acute exacerbations in both primary and secondary care and preventative strategies

Ethical, legal and moral issues related to the provision of COPD care and management
