Introduction

In this BSc module, students will examine a range of specific issues within asthma and pharmacological management, as well as patient education re a range of aspects such as inhaler technique, allergen avoidance and self monitoring. The interface between primary and secondary care will be examined in this module and students will be encouraged to examine this relationship, and to consider the issue of triaging patients and the treatment of the acute exacerbation in a community setting

Module Format

This module is run on a blended learning basis supported by a comprehensive course pack and four structured study days over 30 weeks, which will include tutorials, online and classroom discussion and group work, ensuring that theory and practice are integrated

Aims

This module will enable healthcare professionals to:

Critically analyse theories regarding the aetiology of asthma
Discuss current diagnostic strategies for asthma and consider the viability of these within primary and secondary care
Appraise the pharmacological management of asthma and consider whether this may differ in a subtle way between primary and secondary care
Critically analyse a range of health education strategies which may be employed in asthma patients
Critically review evidence re asthma morbidity and propose explanations for this which reflect on the primary/secondary care interface
Synthesise literature concisely and form appropriate conclusions re major aspects of the primary/secondary care interface which influence asthma control, either negatively or positively; and where possible make suitable recommendations re overcoming negative aspects

The content of the module includes:

Overview of airway anatomy and control of airway calibre
Aetiology of asthma with focus on environmental and genetic aspects
Patterns of asthma prevalence/incidence over the last 30 years in the UK
Approaches to diagnosing asthma from primary/secondary care perspectives
Pharmacological and non pharmacological management of asthma
Self management by asthma patients
Inhaler technique-teaching and assessing by clinicians
The role of PEF monitoring in asthma management
Who should provide education/care for the asthma patient in the community?
Impact of guidelines on asthma management and level of control - how effective are they?
Assessment and management of the exacerbation in primary and secondary settings
