Introduction

This BSc module aims to provide healthcare workers with the knowledge and skills required to care for and manage patients who have type I or type II respiratory failure and who need respiratory support with non-invasive ventilation (NIV).  This module will enable the student to develop approaches to assessment, planning and delivery of individualised care and treatment underpinned by current evidence base

Module Format

This module is run on a blended learning basis supported by a comprehensive course pack and four structured study days over 30 weeks, which will include tutorials, online and classroom-based workshops and discussions, ensuring that theory and practice are integrated

Aims

This module will enable healthcare professionals to

•  Discuss the pathophysiological processes that predispose failure and critically analyse the effects these have on lung mechanics and the individual

• Develop an understanding of the disease specific applications of NIV

• Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions in relation to published literature and discuss how this may influence practice

• Critically examine the ethical, legal and psychosocial issues surrounding the application of NIV in both the acute and chronic patient

• Explore from a critical perspective the factors that contribute to the successful application of NIV

Course Content

The content of the module includes:

• A problem solving approach to applied anatomy, physiology and disease specific pathophysiology including COPD, chest wall diseases, neuromuscular conditions and symptomatology

• The pathophysiological pathways to respiratory failure

• Acid base balance and the interpretation of arterial blood gases and their application to practice

• The principles of oxygen administration

• Terminology, modes and devices utilised in non invasive ventilation

• Evidence base for the acute application and long term application of non invasive ventilation

• Management strategies that improve outcomes

• Exploration of factors that impact upon a successful outcome in NIV

• Ethical and psychosocial aspects of non invasive ventilation and end of life care

• Setting up of an NIV service including audit of existing services

This module can be studied as an independent unit or as a module towards either the BSc (Hons) Respiratory Practice or the University Advanced Certificate in Respiratory Practice awards

Successful completion results in 20 academic credits at BSc level
