Introduction
This BSc module aims to provide healthcare workers with the knowledge and skills required to care and manage patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) from diagnosis, through the disease trajectory, to end of life care. This module will enable learners to develop approaches to assessment, planning and delivery of individualised care and treatment underpinned by current evidence base
Module Format
This module is run on a blended learning basis supported by a comprehensive course pack and four structured study days over 20 weeks, which will include tutorials, online and classroom-based workshops and discussions, ensuring that theory and practice are integrated
Aims
This module will enable healthcare professionals to:

Analyse the impact of social, economic and environmental factors upon the development of COPD and critically appraise this in relation to provision of care

Critically analyse the pathophysiological changes associated with COPD
-
Interpret patient history and clinical data in order to comprehensively assess patients with COPD (including ruling out of differential diagnosis), plan and implement patient care appropriately

Critically reflect and appraise the legal, ethical and moral issues in context of the treatment and care of individuals with COPD

Critically evaluate current research and literature relating to COPD and its management
Course Content
The content of the module includes:

Disease processes applied to normal functioning of the respiratory system

Causes and prevalence of COPD

Diagnosis and assessment of patients including interpretation of spirometry, screening and assessment for oxygen therapy

Psychosocial impact of the disease including end of life and ethical issues

Management strategies including pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies
-
Significance and management of acute exacerbations in both primary and secondary care and preventative strategies
