Introduction

This module aims to highlight some of the key aspects of palliative care in relation to respiratory disease, enabling the student to develop an understanding of the principles and relate relevant aspects back to their own clinical practice.  This module will enable learners to develop knowledge and skills with regards to assignment, planning and delivery of supportive, individualised care and treatment, for patients with severe lung disease and in the end stages of life

Module Format

This module is run on a blended learning basis supported by a comprehensive course pack and four structured study days over 30 weeks, which will include online and classroom discussion, workshops and lectures ensuring that theory and practice are integrated

Aims

This module will enable healthcare professionals to:

• Identify and analyse the provision and inequalities of supportive and palliative services for respiratory patients in relation to existing literature and the students own clinical practice

• Interpret clinical data and psychosocial morbidity in order to comprehensively assess, plan and implement appropriate care for patients with end stage respiratory disease with cognisance of their families and carers needs

• Appraise the legal, ethical and moral issues in context of care provision for individuals in the end of life

• Identify and discuss issues pertaining to communication in end of life care including the role and responsibilities of the various multidisciplinary team members

Course Content

The content of the module includes:

• The concept of palliative care

• Ethical and moral factors

• Socio-economic and political factors influencing palliative care/service

• Patient-centred primary and secondary care approaches to providing evidence-based care for end of life patients in the context of today's healthcare environment

• Practical aspects in palliative care e.g. symptom control

• Components of palliative care and the multidisciplinary team approach

• Disparities between different patient groups e.g. lung cancer patients and COPD patients

• Looking after relatives - who does it, and what are the needs of relatives?

• Psychological issues - pertaining to professional carers, patients and informal carers

This module can be studied as an independent unit of study or towards the Diploma in Respiratory Practice.  To access this module, you would be expected to have had at least one year post registration experience and should be working with or involved in the care of patients with respiratory conditions

Successful completion results in 30 academic credits at Diploma level
