Introduction
This module aims to provide healthcare workers with an understanding of pulmonary rehabilitation and pulmonary rehabilitation programmes. It will enable students to develop approaches to assessment, planning and delivery of individualised programmes of care, underpinned by current evidence base
Module Format
This module is run on a blended learning basis supported by a comprehensive course pack and four structured study days over 30 weeks, which will include online and classroom discussion, workshops and lectures ensuring that theory and practice are integrated
Aims
This module will enable healthcare professionals to:

Analyse concepts upon which pulmonary rehabilitation is based and identify its essential components

Assess health needs of individuals and initiate appropriate rehabilitation strategies, in relation to the available literature, for the patient with pulmonary impairment

Identify psychosocial issues related to chronic pulmonary impairment and discuss the strategies in place to facilitate patient well-being

Explore legal, ethical and moral issues which impact upon care in the pulmonary rehabilitation setting

Evaluate pulmonary rehabilitation care delivery, and identify strategies to enhance the care of patients with chronic impairment including patient and carers health promotion and education
Course Content
The content of the module includes:

The basis for pulmonary rehabilitation including demographic influences, demand, effectiveness, economics (funding, rationing and resourcing) and political context

Strategies for referral, recruitment, participation and managing attrition

Assessment of health needs including clinical assessment of educational needs, exercise/ability testing, health related quality of life, psychological and social needs

Programme structure and content including multidisciplinary team contribution and inter-collaborative working, and supplementary therapies (inc oxygen, bronchodilators and nutritional supplements)

Patient empowerment and enabling/facilitating changing behaviour

Legal, ethical, moral and financial issues, including accountability, advocacy, preventative vs reactive approaches to managing disease, rationing and resourcing issues

Comprehensive course materials are provided to students. Tutorial time is set aside to support students, with specialist staff always available be either phone, e-mail and on-line. This module can be studied as an independent unit of study towards the Diploma in Respiratory Practice. To access this module, you would be expected to have had at least one year post registration experience and should be working with or involved in the care of patients with respiratory conditions
Success completion results in 30 academic credits at diploma level
