The Management of Respiratory Failure Including Non Invasive Ventialtion (NIV)

Module Code: HEA2087

Venue: Respiratory Education UK, Aintree & Regional Centres
Cost: £ 575

Introduction
This module aims to provide healthcare practitioners with the knowledge and skills required to provide effective care to patients with respiratory failure who need non-invasive respiratory support (NIV)
Module Format
This module is run on a blended learning basis supported by a comprehensive course pack and four structured study days over 30 weeks, which will include tutorials, online and classroom discussion, workshops and guest speakers, ensuring that theory and practice are integrated
Aims
This module will enable healthcare professionals to:
  • Identify the pathophysiological processes that predispose to respiratory failure
  • Explore the physiological responses to oxygen therapy and non-invasive ventilation, specifically on acid base balance and lung mechanics
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles that underpin the use of non-invasive ventilation
  • Evaluate and reflect upon the effectiveness of interventions and demonstrate an awareness of the limitations of non invasive ventilation in the management of respiratory failure
  • Explore some of the ethical/psychosocial issues that may arise in this group of patients and be aware of the principles that may provide a framework to solve them
Course Content
The content of the module includes:
  • A problem solving approach to applied anatomy, physiology and disease specific pathophysiology including COPD, chest wall diseases, neuromuscular conditions and symptomatology
  • The pathophysiological pathways for respiratory failure
  • Acid base balance and the interpretation of arterial blood gases and their application to practice
  • The principles of oxygen administration
  • Consideration of reflection on practice and how this can impact upon care delivery and management of patients needing non-invasive ventilation
  • Terminology, modes and devices utilised in non-invasive ventilation
  • Practical workshops demonstrating the importance of mask selection sizing and fitting and ventilator set up including troubleshooting techniques
  • Evidence base for the acute application and long term application of non-invasive ventilation
  • Ethical and psychosocial aspects of non invasive ventilation and end of life care
  • Setting up of an non-invasive ventilation service including audit of existing services and clinical scenarios to consider specific management issues
Assessment
4,000 word case study on a selected patient who required NIV support: and a 1,000 word reflective piece considering one aspect of NIV
Student Support
Comprehensive course materials are provided to students.  Tutorial time supports students, with specialist staff always available by either phone, e-mail or on-line.  REUK can also advise on funding possibilities and financial support from a number of sources, we encourage students to get in touch
This module can be studied as an independent unit of study or as a module towards either the Diploma in Respiratory Practice or the University Higher Certificate in Respiratory Assessment & Management awards.  To access this module, you would be expected to have had at least one year post registration experience and should be working with or involved in the care of patients with respiratory conditions
Successful completion results in 30 academic credits at Diploma level
