Introduction
This module examines the problem asthma presents to many people in the UK today. Focusing on the morbidity of this condition, and the level of poor control many patients experience, will help raise students' awareness of what can be done to improve the lives of most asthma sufferers. There is a distinct emphasis on practical aspects of asthma management, with correct use of inhaler devices, and provision of asthma action plans
Module Format
This module is run on a blended learning basis supported by a comprehensive course pack and four structured study days over 30 weeks, which will include tutorials, online and classroom discussion, workshops and guest speakers, ensuring that theory and practice are integrated
Aims
This module will enable healthcare professionals to:

Analyse factors contributing to the morbidity of asthma in the UK

Compare/contrast normal airways and asthmatic airways

Evaluate how asthma treatment is arranged related to current expert guidelines

Analyse the issues of intentional and non-intentional non-adherence in asthma management

Identify the major advantages/disadvantages of the major types of inhaler device and demonstrate appropriate selection of a device for a specific patient

Discuss evidence pertaining to asthma action plans and consider this evidence within the context of the selected patient

Analyse issues related to admission avoidance and community triage/treatment

Asthma morbidity in the UK - prevalence and incidence; impact of asthma on patients' lives, including mortality data and patient's perceptions of asthma

Pharmacological management of asthma under current UK guidelines

Drug delivery in respiratory care, including use of inhaler devices

This module can be studied as an independent unit of study or as a module towards either the Diploma in Respiratory Practice or the University Higher Certificate in Respiratory Assessment and Management awards. To access this module you would be expected to have had at least one year post registration experience and should be working with or involved in the care of patients with asthma
Successful completion results in 30 academic credits at diploma level
