Introduction
This module aims to provide healthcare workers with the knowledge and skills required to care for patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) within a variety of healthcare settings. This module will enable students to gain knowledge and skills regarding methods of assessment and planning and implementation of individualised patient care
Module Format
This module is run on a blended learning basis supported by a comprehensive course pack and four structured study days over 30 weeks, which will include tutorials, online and classroom discussion, workshops and guest speakers ensuring that theory and practice are integrated
Module Aims
This module will enable healthcare professionals to:

Describe the relevant anatomy and physiology of the respiratory tract as it relates to COPD

Discuss the aetiology and pathophysiology of COPD

Interpret patient history and clinical data in order to comprehensively assess patients with COPD (including rule out different diagnosis) and to plan and implement patient care appropriately across a range of healthcare settings

Discuss the role of health professionals in the management of the COPD patient from a primary and secondary care perspective

Analyse the effectiveness of a range of self-management interventions of COPD

Consider professional and ethical issues as they relate to COPD management

Discuss the variety of psychological and physical complications COPD patients face and propose strategies for coping with these
Course Content
The content of the module includes:

Patient-centred primary and secondary care approaches to providing evidence-based care to COPD patients

Prevalence and causes of COPD
-
Disease processes applied to normal functioning of the respiratory system

Diagnosis and assessment of patients including interpretation of spirometry, screening and assessment for oxygen therapy

Organisation and delivery of care and services
-
Psychosocial impact of the disease including end of life and ethical issues

Management strategies including pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies

Significance and management of acute exacerbations in both primary and secondary care and preventative strategies
Assessment
5,000 word case study analysing the holistic care delivered to a specific COPD patient in the student's care

Comprehensive course materials are provided to students. Tutorial time is set aside to support students, with specialist staff always available by either phone, e-mail and on-line. This module can be studied as an independent unit of study or as a module towards either the Diploma in Respiratory Practice or the University Higher Certificate in Respiratory Assessment & Management awards. To access this module, you would be expected to have had at least one year post registration experience and should be working with or involved in the care of patients with COPD
Successful completion results in 30 academic credits at diploma level
