Introduction
This module aims to provide healthcare workers with the knowledge and skills to have an understanding of the assessment, triage and treatment of acutely ill respiratory patients in the community. This module will enable learners to develop approaches to assessment, and planning and delivery of individualised programme of care, underpinned by current evidence base.
Module Format
This module is run on a blended learning basis supported by a comprehensive course pack and four structured study days over 30 weeks, which will include tutorials, online and classroom discussion, workshops and lectures, ensuring that theory and practice are integrated.
Aims
This module will enable healthcare professionals to:

Apply knowledge of the pathophysiological changes in respiratory disease to perform an accurate assessment of the patient

Apply knowledge of clinical examination and history taking to provide an appropriate and accurate assessment and provisional diagnosis for individuals with respiratory disease/disorders

By using a problem solving approach, identify a strategy for the safe and most appropriate management of patients with reference to published guidelines and evidence based care

Have an understanding of other agencies that may be involved in the management of patients at hom,, including multidisciplinary team work and referral pathways

Exploration of the psychosocial, legal, ethical and professional issues that mitigate for or against home management, including advocacy and accountability
Course Content
The content of the module includes:

Applied physiology of the respiratory system

Exploration of the psychosocial, legal, ethical and professional issues that mitigate for or against home management, including advocacy and accountability

Patient assessment, including the principles of respiratory and general assessment, history taking, physical examination

Exploration of the key factors of assessment and application to differential diagnosis

Exploration of the pathway to decline in chronic disease

Interpretation of key investigations in the acute patients including, peak flows, pulse oximetry, capillary blood gases and base line observations

Triage and immediate treatment including oxygen therapy and emergency medication
-
When to admit to hospital

Exploration of guidelines to manage patients safely at home

Clinical scenarios to consider management issues such as acute asthma, exacerbations of COPD and palliative emergencies

Management of exacerbations of COPD, hospital at home and admissions avoidance

Exploration of political and financial influences at both national and local level to manage patients at home

Limitations to practice including accountability
Assessment
4,000 word case study on a selected patient

This module can be studied as an independent unit of study or as a module towards either the Diploma in Respiratory Practice or the University Higher Certificate in Respiratory Assessment & Management awards. To access this module, you would be expected to have had at least one year post registration experience and should be working with or involved in the care of patients with respiratory conditions
