Lecturer
Carol Kelly

Carol is from the Merseyside area and registered as a nurse at Whiston Hospital in 1983. As part of her early career she enjoyed travelling and lived for some time in Cyprus and Saudi Arabia. Carol then settled in Hertfordshire where she lived until returning home to the North West in 2001. At this time Coronary Care was Carol's speciality and she found herself appointed as a Sister in a CCU attached to a Respiratory ward in 1990. This was Carol's first introduction to the respiratory speciality and her career progressed from there, taking up her first appointment as Respiratory Nurse Specialist in 1994. Carol started part-time lecturing with the University of Hertfordshire in 1997 and studied with the institution for her degree in Specialist Nurse Practice (Respiratory Care). Carol is currently studying for an MA in Professional Education and hopes to further develop her career in the area of education in the future. By the way…… Carol has a long-suffering partner to whom she became engaged to in 1990 (they always envisaged a long engagement!) and two fantastic kids aged 7 & 12

Short Course Manager
Karen Frankland

Karen finished school and began a Nursing Cadet Course at Park Hospital, Davyhulme. She then completed her RGN training at the same hospital. Following qualification, Karen worked as a Staff Nurse in general surgery and gynaecology. Karen then completed her midwifery training at St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester. Following the birth of her first daughter, Karen tried night duty for a while (but not for too long!!!). Karen’s first introduction to respiratory care was as a Practice Nurse when she was asked to set up an Asthma Clinic. From this point, Karen’s interest in this area has grown rapidly. Karen obtained her diploma in Asthma Care and became a trainer for the nurses in her locality. After 7 years as a Practice Nurse, she decided she wanted to specialise and spent the next 9 years as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. This involved caring for patients with asthma and COPD both in primary and secondary care. A large part of the role was Nurse Education. This has led to Karen’s current role as Short Course Manager at Respiratory Education UK. Karen’s main objectives are to develop the Short Course Programme to meet the needs of Respiratory Education UK students and maintain the high standards set by the RETC team.

Senior Lecturer
Anne Riches

Anne started in nurse training in 1973 at Walton Hospital in Liverpool, qualifying in 1976. She was particularly interested in A&E work and was a sister in A&E. After a short period of working in Germany, Anne returned to the UK and decided to work in Chester, this time as a night sister on the medical unit. Since then, Anne has had several posts including Ward Manager and eventually specialising in respiratory nursing. Anne has been a Respiratory Specialist Nurse for 12 years. Academically, Anne undertook her first degree in 1998, the ENB Higher Award BSc (Hons) Professional Nursing Practice. Anne has had several articles on Respiratory Care published and has had a poster presentation at the American Thoracic Society. Anne’s specific interests are Respiratory Failure, non invasive ventilation, palliative care and ethical issues. This interest in ethical issues spurred her to complete her Masters in Medical Ethics and Law at Keele University. Anne joined Respiratory Education UK in 2001, seconded for 2 days per week from the Health Service and has been here ever since! Anne leads the Non Invasive Ventilation Module and the Secondary Care Module (now the Management of Respiratory patients in Hospital) at Diploma level and Degree level. The NIV module remains the only academically validated of this nature in the UK. Anne is delighted that the proposed MSc in Respiratory Disease has an ethical issues module which she will be leading. This is an exciting time for us all at Respiratory Education UK and she looks forward to seeing many of you in the classroom.

Lecturer
Pat Fairclough

Pat worked as a riding instructor after leaving school, but soon came into nursing for more stable (pardon the pun!) employment. Pat trained at Ormskirk Hospital and after a short spell on the medical wards moved to the Intensive Care Unit. Pat loved ICU, especially the respiratory patients, staying for 13 years as a staff nurse then Sister. From ICU she completed the MSc in Clinical Nursing at Liverpool in 1996 and moved to Respiratory Nurse Specialist at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital. This is a varied role including many aspects of respiratory care, both acute and community. Pat is a nurse prescriber and interested in non-pharmacological therapies, having undertaken training in hypnotherapy. Pat works 3 days in this post following the arrival of 2 sons. Last year she began doing a half day as a RNS in a GP Surgery and in October 05 Pat started at Respiratory Education UK working one day on COPD and Asthma. The rest of her time is taken up at home with partner Russell, boys Edward (8) and Lewis (5), a horse "Bob! (17) and 2 cats

Lecturer
Alison Lawton

Alison Lawton is the Respiratory Physiotherapy Specialist and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Coordinator at Warrington PCT. At Respiratory Education UK she is responsible for the delivery of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation degree module and assists with the Respiratory Assessment module. Alison's background is mainly in chest medicine both in and outpatient with some community work over the 12 years since she qualified. Alison's main areas of interest are obviously Pulmonary Rehabilitation but she also loves to work with the chronically breathless and anxious patients and has spent the last few years studying alternative methods of treatment ie. acupuncture/pressure and reflexology. In 2004 she successfully graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with an MS'c in Respiratory Physiotherapy, something that was extremely difficult to achieve being a working mum with a toddler, however it has brought her rewards far in excess of the effort needed at the time. Currently Alison is developing her current role at the PCT, opening up pulmonary rehabilitation access to Primary Care referrals and will be commencing an advanced assessment and prescribing course in January 2006.
